Many schools use the d6 Discipline Module not only for disciplinary offences and recognitions, but also as a centralized learner management and record-keeping tool.
Currently, the module only provides two categories:
• Offences
• Recognitions
As a result, schools often create "Offence" entries with 0 points for administrative and communication-related actions such as:
• Parent meetings
• Telephone conversations with parents
• Hearing notifications
• Detention notices
• Warning letters
• Academic intervention notices
• Learner support and follow-up actions
The challenge is that parents receiving these notifications often only see the "Offence" classification, which can create the perception that a learner has committed a disciplinary offence when the entry merely records communication, support, or an administrative action.
At our school, the Discipline Module serves as a central repository for learner-related interventions, parent communication records, academic support actions and disciplinary matters. This enables staff to access a complete learner history from a single location and ensures that important interactions and interventions are recorded consistently.
While the Communication Module can be used to communicate with parents, it does not provide the same structured record-keeping functionality as the Discipline Module.
The Discipline Module allows staff members to:
• Select from predefined entries.
• Maintain consistent terminology across the school.
• Capture records quickly and efficiently.
• Generate a centralized history of learner-related interactions and interventions.
• Reduce the amount of manual typing required by staff.
In contrast, the Communication Module is primarily designed for sending messages and requires more manual input, making it less practical for recording routine learner management actions and follow-up interventions.
For this reason, many schools use the Discipline Module as a structured learner management and record-keeping tool in addition to its disciplinary function.
Suggested Enhancement
Rather than adding only a single new category, it may be more beneficial to allow schools to create and manage their own custom categories within the Discipline Module.
Examples could include:
• Administrative
• Communication
• Learner Support
• Academic Intervention
• Behavior Support
This would allow schoolsto distinguish clearly between:
Disciplinary offences
Positive recognitions
Administrative records
Parent communication
Learner support and intervention actions
Benefits
• Reduces confusion for parents.
• Improves transparency in communication.
• Allows schools to maintain comprehensive learner records within a single module.
• Supports schools that use the Discipline Module for broader learner management purposes.
• Maintains the efficiency of predefined entries while avoiding inappropriate "Offence" labels.
• Provides greater flexibility for schools with different disciplinary and learner management models.
Alternative Option
If custom categories are not feasible, an alternative would be to allow schools to customize the category labels displayed to parents or to introduce a standard "Administrative" category alongside Offences and Recognitions.
We believe this enhancement would benefit many schools that use the Discipline Module as a centralized learner record system rather than solely for discipline point management.
Vriendelike groete
