Immigrants : Refugee and Permanent Reseident

Immigrants : Refugee and Permanent Reseident

Asylum seeker/refugee

The permit for an asylum seeker/refugee, allows them to work and study in the country.  Children are sometimes linked to their parents' application.  Currently there is only an option for ASYLUM SEEKER on d6.  Once an asylum seeker's application for refugee status is granted, they will receive a REFUGEE permit.  This cannot be indicated as such on d6 as there is no option for REFUGEE.

Permanent Residency

A child will be eligible for PERMANENT RESIDENCY if at least one parent is already a permanent resident

of SA.  Upon the age of 18 years, he/she will be able to apply for citizenship and will only then receive a 13-digit ID-number as they are then citizens of the country.   Under the age of 18, these learners will have a PERMANENT RESIDENT PERMIT with NO EXPIRY DATE.  With this permit they are allowed to study and attend school in SA without the need for a study visa.

D6 only caters for South Africans with ID-numbers or immigrants with study visa.  Learners with permanent residency do not fit into any of these categories and cannot be indicated as such.
