Creating and Managing Groups

Creating and Managing Groups

Groups are the foundation of targeted communication. Instead of sending every message to everyone, you create groups to reach the right people — for example, Grade 7, Choir, or Teachers.

Groups → Add

How do I create a new group?

  1. Go to Groups and click Add.

  2. Enter a group name (for example, Grade 7 or Choir).

  3. Under Advanced Properties, configure the group settings (see below).

  4. Click Next to add members: choose Everyone, select specific individuals, or select by Type.

  5. Click Create Group.

What do the group settings mean?

  • Members can unsubscribe: Members can leave this group themselves. Use this for optional groups like Choir or Sports Teams.

  • Auto-add new App users: New members who download the App automatically join this group and can see past messages. Good for general marketing or welcome notices.

  • Hide group in App: Members cannot see or leave this group. They are added automatically. Use this for mandatory notice groups like General Notices.

  • Private / Closed group: Only people you specifically invite can join. Use this for sensitive groups like Teachers Only or SGB Voters.

Tips

  • Optional groups: For clubs and activities, enable Members can unsubscribe so parents can manage their own notifications.

  • Mandatory groups: For school-wide communications, enable Hide group in App so all members receive messages without being able to opt out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hidden group and a private group?

A hidden group is invisible to members on the App — they are added automatically and cannot leave. A private group is visible but only people you specifically invite can join it.

Can parents unsubscribe from a group?

Only if the "Members can unsubscribe" setting is enabled for that group. If it is disabled or the group is hidden, members cannot leave on their own.

How do I add members to an existing group?

Open the group from the Groups page, click to edit the members, and add individuals or select by Type. Click Save to update the group.

What does "auto-add new App users" do?

When enabled, any new member who downloads the d6 Communicator App and joins your school will automatically be added to this group. They will also be able to see past messages sent to the group.

Can I delete a group after creating it?

Yes. Open the group from the Groups page and use the delete option. Deleting a group removes it from the portal and the App, but the members themselves remain in your database.
