This article explains how to set up classrooms and assign subjects in d6 after implementation. Correct classroom and subject configuration ensures that learners are correctly grouped, that teachers are linked to the right subjects, and that academic reporting functions correctly.
My School > Staff > Classrooms
Classrooms define the groups that learners belong to within each grade. Subjects are assigned to classrooms and linked to the teachers who teach them. This structure drives mark capturing, attendance recording, and report card generation in d6.
Navigate to My School > Staff > Classrooms.
You will see a list of existing classrooms organised by grade.
Click Add Classroom.
Enter classroom number.
Select the grade from drop down list.
Enter the classroom name (e.g., Grade 1A, Grade 1B).
Select the tuition language for that specific class.
Assign the class teacher responsible for this classroom.
Click Save.
This would be completed under their learner profile by selecting the correct grade and class division.
Navigate to My School > Curriculum > Subject groups.
Create groups according to how many divisions you may have(e.g 1A ,1B, 1C) .
Navigate to My School > Curriculum > Subject Choices per Group
Select the subjects from the left side and throw the list of subjects over to the right.
Select the register classes on your left and throw the classes over to the right.
Repeat for each grade.
Click Save when all subjects are assigned.
Subject list: Before assigning subjects to classrooms, ensure all subjects are configured under My School > Curriculum > Set up learning program. Use the official subject names as required by CAPS or your school's curriculum.
Teacher assignment: A teacher can be assigned to multiple subjects. Ensure each teacher's profile is created before assigning them to a subject.
Custom subjects: If your school offers non-standard subjects (e.g., coding, drama), these can be added as custom subjects in the subject configuration screen.
Yes. d6 supports subject-based grouping where a learner's home class is different from their subject class. This is common in secondary schools where learners choose between different subject options. Contact your d6 implementation consultant to configure subject grouping for your school.
Open the classroom record, navigate to the learner list, select the learner, and choose Remove from Classroom. You can then reassign the learner to a different classroom.
At the end of the year, learners are promoted to the next grade using the learner progression tool. New classroom assignments are made for the new year. Previous classroom records are retained for historical reference.
Open the classroom record, edit the teacher assignment field, and select the new teacher. The change takes effect immediately and applies to all future mark captures and attendance records for that classroom.
