This article explains how to copy events from a linked external calendar (Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, or iCal) into your d6 general calendar. After copying, events become fully editable in d6 and stop syncing with the external source. This feature is intended for school administrators managing calendar consolidation.
Calendar > External calendar > Copy events to general calendar
Use this feature when you want to:
Stop syncing with an external calendar: You no longer need the live connection but want to keep all existing events in d6.
Edit previously read-only events: Events imported via a synced external calendar cannot be edited in d6. Copying them to the general calendar makes them fully editable.
Consolidate multiple calendars: Merge events from several external calendars into one d6 general calendar. Duplicates are removed automatically.
Switch calendar providers: Move from an external calendar provider to managing events directly in d6.
Navigate to your calendar: Go to the Calendar section in the d6 Communicator Portal and select the external calendar you want to copy events from.
Click "Copy Events to General Calendar": This button appears at the top of the calendar details page, next to "Sync All Events Now". It is only visible for eligible external calendars.
Confirm the action: A confirmation window will explain that all events will be copied to the general calendar and will no longer sync with your external source. Click "Copy Events" to proceed, or "Dismiss" to cancel.
Wait for the process to complete: A "Copying Events" indicator will appear on your calendar. The process runs in the background and takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes per 100 events. You will receive an email when it is complete.
All events are copied: Every event from the external calendar is moved to the general calendar.
Duplicates are removed: If the same event exists in multiple calendars, only one copy is kept.
Group visibility is preserved: Events remain visible to the same groups and members as before.
Recurring events are handled: Repeating events are copied with all their occurrences.
Events become editable: After copying, you can edit, delete, or modify these events freely in d6.
Events stop syncing after the copy: Changes made in your external calendar will no longer appear in d6, and changes in d6 will not sync back. This is permanent and cannot be undone.
The external calendar stays connected: New events added to the external calendar after the copy will still sync normally. Only events that existed at the time of copying are affected.
One copy operation at a time: Only one calendar can be copied per community at a time. If another copy is in progress, your request will be queued and start automatically.
Large calendars take longer: Calendars with hundreds or thousands of events will take more time, but the process runs in the background and you will be notified by email when it finishes.
"No general calendar found": Your community does not have a general calendar set up yet. Contact your administrator to create a default general calendar.
"No source calendars available to import from": The external calendar has no events or is not properly connected. Check that the calendar is synced and contains events.
"An import is already in progress": Another copy operation is running for your community. Your request has been queued and will start automatically when the current one finishes.
"Failed to copy events": Something went wrong during the process. Try clicking the button again. If the issue persists, contact d6 support.
Copy button not visible: The button only appears for external calendars that are eligible for copying. It will not show on d6 calendars, general calendars, or calendars that have already been copied.
