Overview of subjects and learning areas

Subjects and learning areas form the foundation of your school's curriculum structure in d6. Each subject must be linked to the correct phase and grade before class lists, marks, and report cards can be configured. Post-implementation, your subjects are typically pre-loaded but may require review and adjustment to match your school's specific offering.

How do I create a new subject?

Step 1 — Navigate to the Subjects menu

1. Log in to d6 as an administrator.

2. Go to My School > Curriculum > Subjects.

3. Click Add New in the top left corner.

Step 2 — Complete the subject details

1. Select the Grade from the drop down list.

2. Enter the Type -if it is an language or not.
   

3. Add the name in both English and Afrikaans field as well as a code for each subject.

4. Add ordering number ( the way it should display no.1 being first no. 10 being last in the list )

5. Click Save to create the subject.

How do I edit or deactivate an existing subject?

1. Go to My School > Curriculum > Subjects.

2. Locate the subject using the search or filter by grade/phase.

3. Edit the required status field to Inactive or Delete and click Accept Changes.

Important notes

• CAPS alignment: Learning area names must match the DBE CAPS framework exactly for correct LURITS reporting.

• Duplicate prevention: d6 will warn you if a subject with the same name already exists in the same grade. Review before saving.

• Home language vs first additional language: These must be configured as separate subjects, not variants of the same record.

• Linked records: Editing a subject name after class lists and marks have been captured will update all linked records automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a subject after class lists have already been created?

Yes. You can add a new subject at any time. Once created, you will need to manually allocate learners to the new subject via the class list screen and assign a teacher before marks capture becomes available.

Why is a subject not appearing on the report card?

How do I remove a subject that was loaded incorrectly during implementation?

If no marks or class lists are linked to the subject, you can deactivate it immediately. If it has linked data, contact your d6 implementation consultant before deactivating, as removing the subject may affect historical reports.
