How to set up d6 Pay and Finance Projects for cashless payments

This article explains how to enable cashless fee collection through d6 Pay and how to use Finance Projects for one-off payment campaigns such as tours, fundraisers, or uniform runs. It is for school finance administrators.

Finance > Debtors > Payment Options  |  Finance > Projects

What is d6 Pay?

d6 Pay allows parents to pay school fees directly through the d6 Connect parent app using a connect Wallet or a credit or debit card. When enabled, parents see a Pay Now button on their School Fee balance amount in the app and can complete payment immediately without logging into internet banking or visiting the school. Payments are automatically allocated to the learner account in d6 and a proof of payment gets emailed automatically to the parent.

How to enable d6 Pay on a payment option

  1. Navigate to Finance > Debtors > Payment Options.

  2. Open the payment option you want to enable cashless payments for.

  3. Set Cashless to Yes.

  4. Save.

Repeat for each payment option where you want to offer d6 Pay. Parents linked to that payment option will immediately see the Pay Now button in d6 Connect.

What are Finance Projects?

Finance Projects are one-off payment campaigns for specific events or purchases that fall outside normal school fees. Common examples include:

  • School tours

  • Fundraiser contributions

  • Uniform or stationery drives

  • Any ad hoc payment that applies to a specific group of learners

Finance Projects are published to the d6 Connect app, where parents can view and pay the project amount directly. Funds are automatically captured to the correct learner account and project code.

How to set up a Finance Project

  1. Navigate to Finance > Projects.

  2. Click Add and enter the project name, amount, and closing date.

  3. Link the relevant learners to the project (individual learners, a class, or the whole school).

  4. Set the project status to Active.

  5. Publish to the d6 Connect app so parents can see and pay the project.

Important notes

  • Finance Projects are separate from regular billing. They do not affect a learner’s monthly school fee statement unless you choose to include them.

  • Set a realistic closing date for each project. Once the closing date passes, the Pay Now button is hidden from parents in the app.

  • You can link a project to a subset of learners — for example, only Grade 7 learners for a matric camp contribution.

  • Confirm with your d6 implementer that d6 Pay is activated you will not see the options on your management system if you did not add this module to you package. There is an onboarding process with the payment gateway before live payments can be accepted.

Frequently asked questions

Does d6 Pay work for all banks?

d6 Pay uses a standard card payment gateway that accepts all major South African credit and debit cards regardless of the parent’s bank. Parents do not need to be with a specific bank to use d6 Pay.

A parent completed a d6 Pay payment but it is not showing on their account. What do I do?

d6 Pay payments are usually allocated automatically within a few minutes. If a payment is not showing after 15 minutes, check the Finance > Cashbook for any unallocated transaction matching the amount and date. If you cannot locate it, contact d6 support at support@d6plus.co.za with the payment reference number and the date of the transaction.

Can I use a Finance Project for a regular monthly fee?

No. Finance Projects are designed for one-off campaigns, not recurring fees. For recurring fees, create a billing category and payment option instead and link learners to the payment option. This ensures the fee is billed correctly each month and appears on the learner’s regular statement.

Can parents opt out of a Finance Project?

Yes. Parents can choose not to pay a Finance Project — it is separate from compulsory school fees. If your project is compulsory (for example, a school tour deposit that all learners must pay), consider adding it as a payment option rather than using a Finance Project.
