Key Terms: A Glossary for the d6 Communicator Portal

Before you begin using the d6 Communicator Portal, it helps to understand the key terms you will encounter. Use this article as a quick reference dictionary.

Glossary of terms

  • Community: Your school or organisation. Everything in the portal is built around your community.

  • Portal: The website you log in to as an administrator. It is the control centre for the d6 Communicator App.

  • Member: A person who belongs to your community (for example, a teacher, learner, or parent) who has been added to your database.

  • Public follower: Someone who follows your school on the App but is not formally in your database (for example, a grandparent). Public followers will only see communication generated in public groups on your community.

  • System user: A staff member who has been given permission to log in to the portal and help create, send and manage communication (for example, a teacher or secretary).

  • Group: A way to organise people so you can send messages to the right audience (for example, "Grade 7" or "Rugby Team").

  • Type / Tag: A label that describes something about a person, such as "Parent", "Child", "Mother".

  • Contact form: A feature on the App where parents can send messages to specific departments (for example, Finance or the Sports Coordinator). Messages submitted via the contact form are sent directly to a designated email address for the departments created and are not tracked or managed within the portal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a member and a public follower?

A member is someone formally added to your school's database (such as a parent, learner, or teacher). A public follower is someone who follows your school on the App without being in your database, such as a grandparent or prospective parent.

What is a system user?

A system user is a staff member at your school who has been given login access to the portal. They can help manage communication, for example a secretary or teacher.

What is a group used for in d6 Communicator?

Groups let you organise members so you can send targeted messages to the right audience. For example, you might create a group for "Grade 7" or "Rugby Team" instead of messaging everyone.

Can I change the types or tags on the portal?

No. Types and tags (such as "Parent" or "Child") are preset by d6 and cannot be changed by administrators. They are used to categorise members in your database.

What is a contact form?

A contact form is a feature on the d6 App that allows parents to send enquiries to specific departments at your school, such as Finance or the Sports Coordinator. You set up the topics in the portal under Settings. Note: Messages submitted via the contact form are sent directly to a designated email address and are not tracked or managed within the portal.
