OSM: Curriculum Support Plan – CAPS

OSM: Curriculum Support Plan – CAPS

What this product means for your school

The Curriculum Support Plan (CAPS) is a structured curriculum maintenance service for schools following the CAPS curriculum framework. It ensures your school’s curriculum is correctly set up and maintained in line with CAPS requirements, including DOE subjects, from the start of the academic year.

At the beginning of each year, once the Department of Education releases and confirms the CAPS curriculum within the d6 system, the OSM team ensures your curriculum is correctly implemented and aligned.

What the OSM team does

When your school is on this plan, the OSM team will:

  • Insert the approved CAPS yearly preset into your system.

My School > Curriculum > Learning Programme

  • Apply the preset for all grades and all terms (Term 1–4).

  • Ensure the curriculum setup is fully aligned to CAPS.

My School > Curriculum > Set Up Learning Programme

  • Ensure all DOE subjects, tasks, assessments, and weightings are correctly structured according to CAPS.

Important setup process

At the start of the year, when we insert the CAPS preset:

  • If your school has already captured marks, we will notify you in advance that these marks may be removed as part of the curriculum reset and CAPS preset insertion process.

  • A system-wide communication and notice will be sent to all schools on this plan:

    • Before setup begins

    • During the setup process

    • After completion, confirming that schools may continue capturing marks

  • Please note:

    • It is critical that schools do not capture marks until the CAPS preset has been inserted and the curriculum setup is confirmed as complete.

    • Once communication is sent confirming completion, schools may continue with normal mark entry.

Important: There is a high likelihood that existing marks will be removed, as the system requires a clean CAPS-aligned structure before marks can be accurately captured.

System requirement before setup

We cannot insert the CAPS preset if:

  • The school has not rolled over into the new academic year, or

  • Marks are still being actively captured in the current year setup.

School responsibilities before setup begins

Before the new year setup, schools must ensure:

  • All grades (Term 1–4) have subjects correctly activated.

My School > Curriculum > Set Up Learning Programme > Step 1

  • All subjects that will be used in the academic year are correctly selected and active.

What this plan covers

This plan includes CAPS curriculum setup and maintenance only, specifically:

  • Inserting CAPS presets

  • Aligning the curriculum structure to CAPS

  • Ensuring tasks, assessments, and weightings follow CAPS

This plan does not include:

  • Subject choices

  • Subject groups or allocations

  • Calculation methods

  • Decision guidelines

  • Non-DOE subject setup

  • Ongoing structural curriculum redesign outside CAPS

  • Changing of Alias names

Important notes

  • We do not adjust CAPS structure or weightings outside of CAPS compliance, as this may place the school at risk.

  • Any changes outside CAPS must be supported by:

    • A Department memo

    • An ATP document

    • A district circular

  • In such cases, changes may be implemented but will be confirmed as being at the school’s own risk and responsibility.

What about non-DOE subjects?

All non-DOE subjects are the responsibility of the school, including:

  • Subject setup

  • Tasks and assessments

  • Weightings and structure

These are not included in this plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can schools capture marks before setup is complete?

No. Schools must wait until communication is sent confirming that CAPS setup is complete.

Will marks be removed during setup?

In many cases, yes. Marks may be removed because the system must be reset to apply the CAPS preset correctly. Communication is always sent in advance.

How will schools be informed?

Communication is sent before setup begins, during the process, and after completion (the green light to continue capturing marks).

Can the preset be inserted if the school is still on the previous year?

No. The system must first be rolled over to the current academic year before CAPS setup can be applied.

What must schools check before setup?

Ensure all subjects are correctly activated.

My School > Curriculum > Set Up Learning Programme > Step 1

Final note

This is a CAPS curriculum compliance and maintenance plan only, ensuring that your school’s curriculum is correctly structured, aligned, and maintained according to official CAPS requirements.
