Targeting the Right Recipients

Targeting the Right Recipients

When sending to a group that contains both children and parents, the portal gives you precise control over exactly who receives the message. This is called Advanced Targeting.

Messages → New → Next → Targeting options

What targeting options are available?

  • Selected + linked parents: Sends to the children AND their linked parents. Best for general school notices where both parties need to be informed.

  • Only linked parents: Sends only to the parents, not the children. Best for fee notices, parent meetings, or any communication not appropriate for learners.

  • Only selected children: Sends only to the learners. Best for class reminders, homework notices, or internal academic communications.

  • Only selected recipients: Sends to the exact people you selected as recipients, with no automatic extension to linked parents or children. Best for precise, manual targeting.

Tips

  • Fee reminders: For payment requests, always use "Only linked parents" — financial communications should not be sent to learners.

  • Event notices: For excursion notices, use "Selected + linked parents" to ensure both the learner and their parent receive the information.

Frequently asked questions

What is advanced targeting?

Advanced Targeting lets you control exactly who receives a message when a group contains both children and parents. You can choose to send to both, only parents, only children, or only the specific people you selected.

Which option should I use for fee or payment requests?

Use "Only linked parents" so that financial communications go to parents only and are not sent to learners.

What happens if a parent is not linked to their child?

If a parent is not linked to a child, they will not be included when you use the "linked parents" targeting options. Make sure parent-child links are set up correctly in your Members database.

Can I combine targeting with specific groups?

Yes. First select the group you want to message (for example, Grade 7), then choose the targeting option to refine who within that group receives the message.
