Understanding Public Followers

Understanding Public Followers

A Public Follower is someone who follows your school on the d6 Communicator App but is not in your formal member database — for example, a grandparent, community member, or prospective parent.

Is this feature available for my school?

This feature is only available for open communities. If your school is set up as a closed or private community, public followers are not applicable.

How do public followers work?

  • Self-follow: Public followers can find and follow your school through the App without being formally registered in your database.

  • Default groups: They are automatically added to any default groups you have configured. This means they will receive messages sent to those groups.

  • Not in Members list: Public followers do not appear in your Members list unless you promote them to full members.

How do I promote a follower to a full member?

If you need to add a public follower to specific groups or link them to a learner, you can promote them to a full member from their profile in the Public Followers section.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a member and a public follower?

A member is formally added to your school's database and can be placed in specific groups and linked to learners. A public follower follows your school through the App but is not in your database and only receives messages sent to default groups.

Do public followers appear in my Members list?

No. Public followers are listed separately in the Public Followers section. They only appear in the Members list if you promote them to full members.

Can a public follower receive messages from the school?

Yes, but only messages sent to the default groups they are automatically added to. They cannot receive messages sent to specific groups unless they are promoted to full members and added to those groups.

Why can I not see the public followers feature on my portal?

Public followers are only available for open communities. If your school is set up as a closed or private community, this feature is not applicable and will not appear in the portal.
