How do subscriptions and group membership work with Wonde?

This article explains how app subscriptions, group membership, and the "can leave" setting work when members are managed through the Wonde integration. It covers what happens when members are added, removed, or when they unsubscribe. It is intended for d6 support staff handling subscription queries from Wonde-integrated schools.

How do automatic subscriptions work?

When the Wonde sync adds a member to a d6 group, the member record is created or updated, the member is added to the group, and the user is automatically subscribed in the app (if they have a user account with a matching email or phone). The group appears in the user's app immediately.

What does the "can leave" setting control?

Every group has a "can leave" setting that determines whether members can unsubscribe themselves:

  • Can leave = true: Members can unsubscribe from the group at any time. This is common for parent groups.

  • Can leave = false: Members cannot unsubscribe. The unsubscribe button is disabled or hidden in the app. This is used for essential communication groups where students or staff must stay subscribed.

Wonde-synced members inherit the group's default "can leave" setting when they are added.

What is the difference between a member and a public follower?

  • Members: Added to the group explicitly by an admin or assignment set. Counted in group membership statistics. The "can leave" setting applies. Can be managed by Wonde sync.

  • Public followers: Following the group without being a full member. Can always unsubscribe themselves. Typically created when a member is removed from member status in a non-invite-only group.

Important: being a public follower in d6 Portal does not mean the user is subscribed in the app. If a user unsubscribes in the app, the group disappears from their view even if they remain a public follower in the Portal. They must re-subscribe to see content again.

What happens when Wonde removes a member from a group?

The behaviour depends on the group type:

  • Non-invite-only groups: The member is converted to a public follower. They can still see posts if subscribed in the app, and can unsubscribe at any time. This prevents disruption — the user keeps access but loses member privileges.

  • Invite-only groups: The member is removed completely. They lose all access, the group disappears from their app, and they cannot re-join without being explicitly added by an admin.

What are some common scenarios?

  • Year-end rollover: When the school promotes students (e.g. Year 7 to Year 8) in their MIS, the Wonde sync automatically updates group memberships. Students are removed from old year groups and added to new ones. App subscriptions update automatically.

  • Child leaves school: The student is removed from all groups and unsubscribed from the app. Parents are also unsubscribed from child-related groups automatically if they have no other children at the school.

  • Parent unsubscribes then gets re-added: If a parent unsubscribes from a group where "can leave" is true, they become a public follower but are unsubscribed in the app. On the next sync, if their child is still in the group, they are re-added as a member and automatically re-subscribed.

Frequently asked questions

A parent says they were removed from a group but can still see posts. Why?

They have been converted from a member to a public follower. If they are still subscribed in the app, they can still see posts. They can unsubscribe at any time. Explain that they are now following the group rather than being a full member.

Why does a parent keep getting re-subscribed after unsubscribing?

If the parent's child is still in the relevant group via a Wonde assignment set, the next sync will re-add the parent as a member and re-subscribe them in the app. This is by design to maintain parent-child visibility.

Can a student unsubscribe from a locked group?

No. If the group's "can leave" setting is false, students cannot unsubscribe. The unsubscribe button is disabled or hidden in the app.

What is the difference between Portal membership status and app subscription?

These are separate things. d6 Portal tracks group membership (member or public follower). The app tracks subscriptions (subscribed or unsubscribed). A user can be a public follower in the Portal but unsubscribed in the app, meaning they will not see any posts from that group.
